Dark circles under the eyes: common causes and what helps
Short answerDark circles usually come from genetics, extra pigment under the eyes (common in deeper Indian skin tones), thin skin that shows blood vessels, hollows that cast shadows, or tiredness and allergies. Sunscreen, a caffeine or vitamin C eye product, enough sleep and treating allergies can make them less visible.

Common causes
- Pigmentation: extra melanin under the eyes, often brown in colour.
- Thin skin: blood vessels show through as blue or purple.
- Shadows: natural hollows or puffiness above them.
- Lifestyle: short sleep, rubbing eyes, allergies and dehydration.
What can help
- Wear sunscreen up to the under-eye area every day.
- Use an eye serum with caffeine, vitamin C or peptides.
- Sleep well and keep allergies under control.
- Use a peach or orange colour corrector under concealer on deeper skin.
When to see a doctor
If dark circles appear suddenly, on one side only, or with swelling, see a doctor or dermatologist.
