Seasonal colour analysis explained: the 4 families and 12 seasons

Short answerSeasonal colour analysis matches you to a palette using three things: undertone (warm or cool), depth (light or deep) and clarity (bright or soft). Spring and Autumn are warm; Summer and Winter are cool. Each family has three seasons, giving 12 in total, and each season has its own best colours, neutrals, makeup and metals.

The 4 families

  • Spring: warm and clear. Peach, coral, warm aqua.
  • Summer: cool and soft. Dusty rose, powder blue, lavender grey.
  • Autumn: warm and muted. Rust, olive, camel, mustard.
  • Winter: cool and high contrast. True black, pure white, emerald, icy pink.

The 12 seasons

Each family splits by its strongest trait: Light, Warm or Bright Spring; Light, Cool or Soft Summer; Soft, Warm or Deep Autumn; Deep, Cool or Bright Winter.

Why it helps

Wearing colours from your season near your face makes skin look clearer and more even. Colours outside it can make dark circles, redness or dullness more visible.
