Skin undertone: how to tell if you are warm, cool or neutral

Short answerUndertone is the colour beneath the surface of your skin, and it does not change with a tan. Warm undertones look golden or peachy, cool undertones look pink or rosy, and neutral sits in between. Gold jewellery and caramel or copper hair suit warm undertones; silver and ash or platinum hair suit cool undertones.

Skin tone vs undertone

Skin tone is how light or deep your skin is. Undertone is the hue beneath it. Two people with the same deep skin tone can have very different undertones, which is why the same foundation shade can look orange on one and grey on the other.

4 quick tests

  • Veins: greenish veins on your wrist suggest warm; bluish or purple suggest cool; a mix suggests neutral.
  • Jewellery: if gold makes your skin glow, you are likely warm; if silver does, likely cool.
  • White vs cream: stark white flatters cool skin; cream or ivory flatters warm skin.
  • Sun: if you tan easily and rarely burn, you may be warm; if you burn first, you may be cool.

What suits each undertone

  • Warm: gold jewellery, golden, copper and caramel hair, peach and coral makeup, earthy clothes.
  • Cool: silver jewellery, ash, platinum and blue-based red hair, rose and berry makeup, jewel tones.
  • Neutral: most shades work; balanced browns and soft rose are the safest.
